Annual Citywide Garage Sale: April 29, 2017


The 2017 Citywide Garage Sale will be held Saturday, Apr. 29. This is not a City of Waukee-sponsored event. It is a designated day for private citizens to join many others in hosting garage sales.

cleanup bigger thumbThe Citywide Clean-Up Week is held in Waukee every spring. New for 2017, curbside pick-up of large items and electronics will be held on typical collection days (M-F) May 1-5. This is a great opportunity to get rid of bulky waste like furniture, extra garbage, electronics and other similar items. Please have your items on the curb before 7 a.m. on your designated collection. Curbside pick-up does not apply to those living in neighborhood associations and apartment complexes WITH PRIVATE TRASH COLLECTION. 

The following items will not be accepted at the curb:
  • Appliances (see Appliance collection information below)
  • Broken-up concrete/asphalt or demolition materials
  • Hazardous materials (see Household Hazardous Waste Collection information below)
  • Loose shingles and lumber 
  • Anything longer than five feet
  • Paint
  • Propane tanks
  • Tires (See Tire Collection information below)
  • Yard Waste (Collected on Mondays April-November)
For any items not accepted through the curbside pick-up, drop-off stations will be open throughout the city on Saturday, May 6, 2017. 

Hazardous Waste, Appliance and Tire Drop-Off Day - May 6, 2017



Household Hazardous Waste: If you have items such as acid, rechargeable batteries, oil, antifreeze, lawn fertilizer, pesticides, pool chemicals, oil-based paints or aerosols, dispose of them for FREE at the Vince Meyer Learning Center parking lot at 445 5th Street on Saturday, May 6 between 8 a.m. and noon. Note - Sharps must be contained in detergent bottles or sharps containers (not milk jugs or soda pop bottles). Lids to sharps containers must be taped. To safely dispose of medications, access the Drug Drop-Box located at the Waukee Police Department Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. To donate the medication for use by Iowans in need of assistance, call the Iowa Prescription Drug Corporation at 1-866-282-5817.

Appliances and Tires: Appliance and tire disposal will be offered for FREE* at the former Waukee Public Works Building at 1205 6th Street on Saturday, May 6 between 8 a.m. and noon. Appliances must be cleared of food, household hazardous waste and garbage prior to drop-off. Up to five car tires may be dropped of free of charge. *The drop-off fee for each additional car tire will cost $1, and semi-truck and tractor tire drop-offs will cost $5 a piece. Rims will not be accepted.

Optional Electronics Recycling: Electronics are accepted in the weekly garbage collections. However, if you wish to take a green route and recycle these items, please bring those to the former Waukee Public Works Building at 1205 6th Street on Saturday, May 6 between 8 a.m. and noon as well. Most items will be accepted for free, however, regular-sized TVs and computer monitors have a $15 fee per item; console and big screen TV recycling costs $30 per item. Goodwill will also accept working computers and accessories at several locations. We recommend calling first to make sure your location will accept electronics donations.
