The City of Waukee now has an official citywide Rental Property Inspection Program; this effort is required pursuant to Chapter 364.17 of the Iowa Code. The purpose of this code is to ensure property owners, their agents and others who rent out residential dwellings/ sleeping units, meet their responsibilities with respect to safety of the premises.
“The creation of this program serves to fulfill a State requirement,” said Waukee Code Compliance Officer Paul Carpenter. “But, even more importantly, this new means of accountability will allow us to protect tenants. While we believe most landlords here are serving their tenants well, we want to ensure safety and comfort for all of those who choose to rent housing within Waukee.”
The Rental Inspection Certificate is valid for two years from the date of issuance. Properties which were issued a Certificate of Occupancy (CO) within the previous two years do not need to seek inspections and licensing. All properties without recent COs should be inspected as part of the new program. However, Carpenter said that will take some time.
“We estimate there are 2,500 rental units within the City limits,” Carpenter said. “Applications are being accepted now, and inspections will be scheduled based on inspector availability.”
