Drowning in Waukee
Waukee, Iowa – The victim of the drowning incident in the 2500 block of Grand
Prairie Parkway in Waukee on Thursday, August 8, 2024 has been identified as
Keith Bychinski, a 31-year-old male resident of Earlham, Iowa.

Waukee Unveils Public Art Design
Next summer, Waukee residents and visitors can take “A Walk in the Park” with the first public art installation from the City of Waukee following its adoption of a Public Art Master Plan. Three giant, colorful, geometric sculptures ranging from 10 to 14 feet tall will be visible from Grand Prairie Parkway and accessible to people using the trail along Tallgrass Pond. Artist Joshua Wiener says the design is meant to give viewers a sense of play, joy and connection and draws from Waukee's community pride and affinity for fun.

Waukee Fire Responds to Drowning
Waukee Fire and Police Departments were dispatched to a water rescue at city owned ponds in the 2500 block of Grand Prairie Parkway at 3:33 PM. Two witnesses reported they had lost a fishing pole in the water and sought out an adult male who was working in the area for assistance.

Electronics Now Accepted for Waukee Spring Clean-Up
Waukee’s annual Spring Clean-Up now includes electronics recycling. On Saturday, May 4, residents can drop off electronics for free disposal. Data on all recycled devices is destroyed for free by Electronic Asset Security, a R2v3 certified electronics recycler. Official Certificates of Destruction are available for a fee of $10 per device, although they are not required to ensure data is responsibly disposed of.

Central Iowa Water Works Becomes Official Entity with State of Iowa
The new cooperative regional drinking water authority, Central Iowa Water Works, has been established as an official entity. The CIWW board will be responsible for water system planning, drinking water production and wholesale delivery of water to 12 member communities. Among CIWW’s first priorities are a pending expansion at the Saylorville Water Treatment Plant north of Des Moines and source water development planning for the metro to ensure water capacity for the region’s future growth.

Waukee City Council Approves FY 2025 Budget
On April 15, 2024, the Waukee City Council approved the Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 budget as well as the five-year Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). The City will lower its property tax rate from $13.05 to $12.95 per $1,000 of taxable valuation. The City’s portion accounts for approximately 37 percent of Waukee property owners’ consolidated levy rate.

Public Safety Building Groundbreaking April 2024
Waukee is building a new public safety facility to house the Waukee Police Department and part of the Fire Department. A groundbreaking ceremony was held to celebrate the beginning of construction at the new site on April 5, 2024.

City of Waukee Adopts Public Art Master Plan & Releases Call for Artists
The Waukee City Council adopted the first Public Art Master Plan for the City of Waukee. The plan will serve as a guidebook to foster a distinctive identity for Waukee through arts and culture. As the plan is implemented, residents and visitors will have opportunities to enjoy diverse artworks as they shop, work and play.

Boil Advisory Ended for Southwest Waukee
Water samples following the water main break in Southwest Waukee passed the second round of testing early Saturday morning. As a result, the boil advisory was lifted for Waukee water customers impacted by the water main break on December 7. Residents can resume normal water use.

City of Waukee seeks public input for an Aquatic Center Feasibility Study
The City of Waukee is exploring potential development of a new outdoor aquatic center. Residents of all ages can join an interactive public input meeting at Waukee City Hall on Thursday, November 9 or can provide feedback through an online survey through November 30. Survey results will gather information on how community members currently use outdoor aquatic facilities in the area and what types of features they desire in a potential facility for Waukee.

Call for Players and Volunteers for Waukee’s Miracle League
Baseball players with special needs and disabilities are invited to join the fall season for the youth Miracle League with Waukee Parks & Recreation. Volunteers are also needed - umpire the game, be the Miracle League mascot, announce player at-bats or pair up with a player as a "buddy" to cheer them on and help them through the game.

Moody's upgrades City of Waukee ratings
The City of Waukee recently received an upgrade to Aa1 from Aa2 for its issuer rating and outstanding general obligation unlimited tax (GOULT) bonds from Moody's Investors Service. Moody's also assigned an Aa1 rating to the city's General Obligation Bonds, Series 2023B, as well as an initial Aa2 rating to the city's Stormwater Revenue Bonds, Series 2023C.

Trout Day at Triumph Park POSTPONED
Due to high winds and snow in northern Iowa, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources is unable to stock the pond at Triumph Park on Saturday, April 1 is cancelled. Residents and visitors are invited to watch the Iowa DNR stock the pond on Monday, April 3 (weather permitting) and to cast a line to catch one of the specially tagged fish.

Waukee’s Miracle League Spring Season registration open through March 29
Baseball players with special needs and disabilities are invited to join the spring season for the youth Miracle League with Waukee Parks & Recreation. Players take their swing on the Greater Iowa Credit Union Miracle League field at the heart of the baseball complex in beautiful Triumph Park. Registration is open through Wednesday, March 29.

On Friday, February 24, Mayor Courtney Clarke will host the annual State of the City address to highlight the City of Waukee’s progress and challenges of 2022 and a look at priorities for the coming year.
