Public Safety Halloween Open House: October 24, 4:30-6 p.m.

All the ghosts, superheroes, dinosaurs, princesses and other Waukee residents are invited to come to Waukee Public Safety on Thursday, October 24 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. for the Halloween Open House. This free community event is open to all ages, so bring the whole family. Whether you come in your spookiest outfit or just as you are, Waukee Fire and Waukee Police will be ready for some fun and plenty of pictures.

Trick or Trout: October 28, 1-3 p.m.

On October 28 at Triumph Park, watch hundreds of fish pour into the pond as the Iowa DNR stocks it with trout around 1:30 p.m. Residents of all ages are invited to watch the stocking and cast a line at this free community event. This is a great way to fill the afternoon while the kids are out of school for the teacher work day. If you plan to cast a line, be sure to bring your Iowa fishing license and trout stamp if you're 16 years or older. If you're lucky enough to catch a tagged fish, turn the tag in to Waukee Parks and Recreation for a treat from local sponsors.

Get all the details on buying a fishing license, Iowa fishing regulations and more on the DNR website. Per Iowa's fishing regulations, daily limits are 25 for bluegills, 5 for trout and 3 for bass, which must be at least 15 inches long to keep. Find more event information and fishing rules on the Trick or Trout page.

Beggars' Night: October 30, 6-8 p.m.

Each year, the kids in the Waukee community put on their costumes and go door-to-door on Beggars' Night. This trick-or-treating event takes place citywide on October 30 from 6-8 p.m. Many kids trade a joke for candy, so it's a good time to brush up on some funny jokes. Beggars' Night is a unique tradition for the Des Moines metro area that dates back to the 1930s. Find the history in this Des Moines Register article or Des Moines Local History blog
