Important Notices

  • No permit is needed for residential re-roofing. However, ice barrier underlayment is required by local amendment.
  • PRODUCT RECALL SAFETY NOTICE: QO™ Plug-on-Neutral Load Center, Manufactured Feb. 1, 2020-Jan. 12, 2022. Please contact a licensed electrical contractor to verify applicability to what has been installed and its potential applicability with the recall notice.
  • PEXa pipe usage - updated standards as of March 2023
  • EFFECTIVE FEBRUARY 1, 2024:  All builders are responsible for obtaining and uploading the final energy code document from your energy rating provider, utilizing the portal via our online permitting process. Builders should communicate with their energy rating provider to make sure they provide this document to you after the final rating inspection.  
  • Effective April 1, 2024:  Community Development no longer issues permits for the installation of irrigation meters in properties with an issued certificate of occupancy. Contractors should work with the Public Works Water Department to ensure the installation of an RPZ backflow prevention device for underground irrigation systems for any property with an issued certificate of occupancy. Please contact Community Development at 515-978-9533 with any questions or Public Works at 515-978-7920 to schedule installation of an irrigation meter setup.

Building Permits

Building permits are processed by the Community Development Department. Applications can be submitted in the online portal, unless otherwise noted in the following chart. 

The City of Waukee has adopted the 2018 International Building Code and the State of Iowa has adopted 2023 National Electrical Code, 2024 Uniform Plumbing Code, and the 2024 International Mechanical Code. Residential and commercial permit fees are calculated, and builders are notified of permit costs upon issuance. Permit fee calculator spreadsheets are available to aid in estimating permit fees. Sidewalk and Utility Applications

Sidewalk and Utility Permits are handled by the Waukee Public Works department. Submit your application at the Waukee Public Works building.

Citywide Permit Applications

Citywide permit applications are handled by the City Clerk. Permit applications may be submitted online. Deposits and fees may be paid by cash or check made payable to City of Waukee at Waukee City Hall. Applicants can pay deposits or fees with a credit or debit card through the online permit application for the Block Party, Fireworks Display or Peddler permits. The fee for a Special Events permit is cash or check only.
