About Waste Collection Services

City of Waukee solid waste removal services, including garbage and recycling, are provided Monday through Friday by Ankeny Sanitation (ASI). Fees are included on monthly utility bills from the City of Waukee. Carts should be placed at the curb with the lid opening toward the street by 7 a.m. on the designated pick-up day. Yard waste is collected curbside on Mondays from April through November. Holidays can affect collection dates. For example, the week of Labor Day, pick-up will be delayed by one day. If the holiday falls on a weekend, then there will be no delays.

If you live in a townhome, apartment or other multi-family housing location, you may have private trash collection and this information may not apply to you.

Garbage

Residential customers are provided a heavy-duty, 96-gallon wheeled cart with a hinged lid. To request a smaller size (65 gallons), call 515-964-5229. The cost for garbage, recycling and yard waste service is $20 per month. Try to fit all trash in the bin. If you have more trash than will fit, you may place it in bags next to the garbage bin. Small trash items that might blow out of containers, such as packing peanuts, should be bagged within the container. There is no limit on the amount of trash set out, with exception to large items, hazardous waste, tires and appliances.

Items that are not accepted in trash bins include tires, appliances, yard waste, oils, paint cans (except for dried out latex paint), concrete, hazardous materials and construction debris. Many of these items can be dropped for free at our annual Household Hazardous Waste, Appliance, Electronics and Tire disposal day during Spring Clean-up Week. Other times of year, refer to Metro Waste Authority for drop off sites.

Note to new residents: If moving into a newly constructed home, initial containers will be delivered to the home. Containers "ordered" prior to Wednesday morning in a given week will be delivered on Thursday (excluding holidays). If containers have not arrived by the first scheduled garbage day, set out bagged garbage for pick-up. If moving into an existing home, containers should be left by the previous homeowner. If not, please call 515-964-5229.

Yard Waste

Yard waste collection for City/ASI garbage customers occurs on Monday from April through November. Monday holidays may delay collection to Tuesdays. Open burning is not allowed within the city limits of Waukee. Yard waste materials must be put into biodegradable bags or reusable containers with a 40-pound maximum weight. Like garbage and recycling items, please place yard waste on the curb by 7 a.m. See tips and lists of accepted and not accepted items to ensure your yard waste is picked up.

Winter Bin Placement

During or after a snow event, please place containers in the driveway and not in the street. Containers left in the street could potentially be damaged by a snowplow or require snowplow drivers to park and leave their vehicles to move containers from their path.

Landfill

The City of Waukee contracts with the Metro Park West Landfill and the Metro Northwest Transfer Station to accept waste generated in Waukee. The landfill bills the City an annual per capita fee for the use of the landfill only. Rates and fees vary at the landfill based on the amount and type of items/materials of which residents dispose. Each City customer is charged a small fee to cover landfill usage costs; the landfill fee is included in the monthly garbage fee.

Cardboard Recycling Drop Off

Cardboard can be dropped off in the free bin near Warrior Park, which is just off 6th Street. Turn toward the Waukee Cemetery and water tower and look for the bin. Please remove any plastic and Styrofoam. Break down the boxes to flatten them.

Holiday Lights Recycling Drop Off

Drop off any old or broken strands of lights you find as you deck the halls this holiday season. From November 10-January 30, residents can drop off lights in the collection box located at Waukee Public Library. All lights will then be safely recycled at Metro Waste Authority’s Metro Hazardous Waste Drop-Off. LED, classic, plastic, and glass bulbs as well as net, icicle, and battery-powered lights are accepted. Just remember to keep them loose when you drop them in the collection box.

Recycle Batteries and Small Electronics

Batteries can be dangerous in your garbage or recycling bin and have caused fires in landfills. Instead of throwing batteries in the garbage, especially those found in cell phones, tablets and other devices, drop them in the battery recycling box at Waukee City Hall, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. or the Waukee Public Library during regular hours. You can bring household batteries (like AA, AAA, 9V and button types), tool batteries and small electronics like phones or tablets. Bag each battery in the provided bags and drop them in the labeled slot. Cords are accepted too. Metro Waste Authority will handle the rest.

Options to Recycle Electronics

At our annual disposal day during Spring Clean-up, the City often partners with local company, Electronic Asset Security, to recycle TVs, printers, computers and other electronics. Contact Electronic Asset Security or similar electronics recyclers to safely dispose of your electronics at other times of year. Learn more about EAS recycling practices here.

If your computer, tablet or smart phone is still in good condition, consider donating it to the Best Buddies program instead. The devices are distributed to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Find the details on what's accepted at ElectronicAssetSecurity.com/Our-Community. Be sure to remove your Microsoft, Google or Apple accounts and anything else tied to your device before donating it. Drop the device at the EAS office in Urbandale during regular business hours and tell them it's for the Best Buddies program.
