Large Items, Hazardous Waste & Appliances
The City of Waukee's solid waste provider Ankeny Sanitation (ASI)'s services and a partnership with Metro Waste Authority allow Waukee residents to dispose of large garbage items, some hazardous waste, appliances, tires and more, as covered by City customers' monthly garbage fee of $15.50. Below is a listing of year-round opportunities.
The City and its partners also offer an annual Spring Clean-Up Week in late April/early May which addresses disposal of all of the categories below.
Appliances
You must call ASI at 515-964-5229 to schedule the collection of an appliance. There is a fee of $35 for each appliance.
Furniture and Other Bulky Items
City of Waukee/ASI customers are allowed to place one large item on the curb per week, year-round! There is no fee for furniture pick-up. Bulky items such as boards must be cut to smaller than five-foot lengths, with a 50-lb maximum. Carpets must be cut, rolled and tied. Electronics can be placed in trash bins with garbage. As a courtesy, please notify ASI by calling 515-964-5229 in advance of a large item pick-up so the driver can prepare.
The following items will not be accepted at the curb for free:
- Appliances (see Appliance collection information above)
- Broken-up concrete/asphalt or demolition materials
- Fully assembled basketball hoops (must be dismantled into small pieces)
- Hazardous materials (see Household Hazardous Waste Collection information below)
- Loose shingles and lumber
- Anything longer than five feet (call ASI with questions)
- Paint (latex paint can be dried out and placed in garbage bins)
- Propane tanks
- Tires
- Yard Waste (Collected on Mondays April through November)
All items can be dropped off at the Metro Park West Landfill for a charge.
Hazardous Waste/Additional Trash
The Metro Northwest Transfer Station site in Grimes is open the second Saturday of the month from March through November from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. It is also open by appointment only year-round on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Call 515-244-0021 for an appointment time.
Hazardous materials are those with labels that are marked flammable, toxic, corrosive or say "keep out of reach of children". Items like oil, gas, pesticides, fertilizers, fluorescent light bulbs, furniture polish, and even oven and other household cleaners, contain hazardous ingredients that should not go in your regular trash.
Battery Recycling
Some batteries can be dangerous in your garbage or recycling bin and have caused fires in landfills. Instead of throwing batteries in the garbage, especially lithium-ion batthers found in cell phones, tablets and other devices, drop them in the battery recycling box at Waukee City Hall, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. You can also bring household batteries (like AA, AAA, 9V and button types), tool batteries and small electronics like phones or tablets. Bag each battery in the provided bags and drop them in the labeled slot. Cords are accepted too. Metro Waste Authority will handle the rest.

Options to Recycle Electronics
At our annual disposal day during Spring Clean-up, the City often partners with local company, Electronic Asset Security, to recycle TVs, printers, computers and other electronics. Contact Electronic Asset Security or similar electronics recyclers to safely dispose of your electronics at other times of year. Learn more about EAS recycling practices here.
If your computer, tablet or smart phone is still in good condition, consider donating it to the Best Buddies program instead. The devices are distributed to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Find the details on what's accepted at ElectronicAssetSecurity.com/Our-Community. Be sure to remove your Microsoft, Google or Apple accounts and anything else tied to your device before donating it. Drop the device at the EAS office in Urbandale during regular business hours and tell them it's for the Best Buddies program.
